What is an MRI?

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the robust tool available to visualize the body and its anatomy. Whereas conventional x-rays and CAT scans can give basic detail of the bones, MRI can provide detailed images in multiple planes.

Why would I need an MRI?

MRI enables doctors to “see” through bone and clearly defines soft-tissue structures. MRI is an important tool in the diagnosis and evaluation of sports and work-related injuries, especially those affecting the knee, shoulder, hip, elbow, and wrist. The MRI images allow the physician to see even very small tears and injuries, disorders and diseases which may be affecting the tendons, ligaments or cartilage.

What can an MRI diagnose?

MRIs are used to diagnose a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to: brain and spinal cord injuries, tumors, joint and musculoskeletal disorders, heart and vascular diseases, and internal organ abnormalities.

How long does an MRI take?

The duration of an MRI scan varies depending on the type of scan and the area being imaged. Typically, our MRI can take anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes depending on the body part that is being scanned.

What can I wear to an MRI?

It's crucial to remember to remove any items containing metal, such as jewelry or clothing with metal fastenings. This ensures your safety and the quality of the imaging process. But don't worry if you forget! We've got you covered. Our facility provides comfortable gowns and shorts for you to change into before your MRI scan.

Can I bring and wear electronics during the MRI exam?

No, unfortunately, you cannot bring electronics such as a phone or watch inside the MRI exam room. The strong magnetic field generated by the MRI machine can damage or destroy electronic devices. To ensure the safety of both you and your belongings, we provide lockers where you can securely store your personal items during the duration of your exam.

Can I have metal implants inside me when I am getting an MRI?

No, our MRI machine is not safe if you have a pacemaker, metallic implants, or neurostimulators. However, metallic implants are evaluated to determine if they are MRI safe.
